It must be used in combination with a groove weld symbol to avoid mix-up with a plug or a
slot weld. An ‘R’ may be put inside the backing symbol if the backing shall be removed after welding.
The way I see it, a plug/
slot weld would fill up the entire hole while a fillet weld only at the edges - how will the fillet weld be able to support the axial loads with less weld, while a plug/slot weld which fills the entire hole cannot.
Weld symbols are distinct markings on blueprints that tell you what type of weld is required and where it should be placed.
